Taipei Times Copyright Policy
1. Copyright Ownership
The Taipei Times owns the copyright for articles, photos, and other content produced by its staff reporters and photographers. The Taipei Times does not own the copyright for content produced by external sources, such as wire services, and can not grant reprint permission for such content.
2. Re-use of Taipei Times content in printed form
3. Re-use of Taipei Times content on the Internet
4. Contributing Authors
Please note: The Taipei Times does not own the copyright to "contributed" articles, such as those sent to us by university professors, political figures, freelance writers, etc.. Therefore, The Taipei Times is not able to grant reprint permission for any such content. Such permission should be sought from the author directly.
The key distinction between what you can and can't do is the proportion of the copyrighted work you wish to re-use -- all of it, most of it, or just a small part of it. Simply put: you can use short quotations, as long as they aren't too lengthy, and don't "give away" too much of the original content. The rules may vary, depending on the nature of the copyrighted work being quoted and the way it is used. For example, quoting five or ten paragraphs from a 500-page novel could be considered "fair use" while quoting even five lines from a short poem might be a violation.
For newspaper articles, such as the majority of The Taipei Times' content, the customary limit is one or two paragraphs. You may not, under any circumstances, reprint/re-use all (or even most) of an article or photo owned by The Taipei Times.
So, if you see an article on this website that you would like to point out to your readers, use the "quote-and-link" method. DO NOT just copy and paste our whole article into your website! That is illegal, and also rather rude. Instead, write something to describe the article, perhaps quoting a few choice lines to highlight a point of interest, and provide an HTML link to the original article on this website. (Here is a real-world example of the "quote-and-link" method in use.)
